Measuring blood glucose levels is a hated ritual for diabetic patients worldwide. But the glucometers that work for diabetics can also help people on a diet, athletes, and fitness enthusiasts better track how their bodies are responding to food and exercise. The challenge is to design a product that would be appropriate to the consumer market and function more as a tracker than a medical device.

Glucovation out of Carlsbad, California, a new company founded by former Dexcom engineers, has developed the SugarSenz continuous glucose monitor. Much like devices for diabetics, it sticks onto the abdomen and penetrates the skin to receive regular samples of blood for testing. The company claims it will not require calibration using blood from finger pricks.
